The authentic knife of the Marcillac winegrowers. An object of memory that has become an exceptional knife.

01

The story

A working tool
we thought was forgotten.

The history of the Liadou is inseparable from that of the Aveyron vineyards. The Liadou, meaning "tool for tying" in Occitan, is the authentic knife of the Marcillac winegrowers.

Simple, sturdy and functional, it once accompanied every winegrower in their daily work. Its thick, characteristic blade made it a particularly reliable and durable tool.

A knife born
in the vineyards.

02 — The tool

A knife born
in the vineyards.

The Liadou was used to split the wicker stems used to tie the vine shoots and form a crown, following the traditional crown pruning technique.

The arrival of wire trellising gradually led to the abandonment of this ancestral practice and the disappearance of the Liadou from winegrowers' pockets.

A story closely bound
to that of the vineyards.

03 — The region

A story closely bound
to that of the vineyards.

At the end of the 19th century, the Vallon de Marcillac had more than 4,000 hectares of vines. Phylloxera, agricultural changes, the frost of 1956 and the rural exodus from Aveyron severely weakened the vineyards.

For several decades now, the vineyards have been making a strong comeback, and with them the Liadou du Vallon®.

04 — Memory

A knife
that tells a story.

On the slopes of the Marcillac vineyards, every gesture required the right tool. The Liadou was designed for exactly that.

Selecting the shoots 01

The vine

Selecting the shoots

The winegrower selected the shoots that would bear the bunches before bending them to form a wide loop.

Splitting the wicker 02

The gesture

Splitting the wicker

The wicker strands, gathered at the edges of the plots, were split with the Liadou.

Tying the shoots 03

The crown

Tying the shoots

The end of the wicker was cut on a bevel and then inserted into a loop to hold the vine firmly in place.

A perfectly suited tool 04
